Virtual Phantom Beauty Shoot(s)
Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 10:25PM I think I'm running out of clever lines for my headers...
Apparently, not so lovely on the outside...
In any case, I just came off two days of shooting for this short film by Jane Nisselson of Virtual Beauty. This film is meant to open a symposium at the MoMa sometime in March. In the film/symposium, artists are being teamed up with fragrance specialists at IFF to explore the sense of smell in conjunction with their respective artwork. The folks behind the symposium believe that artists have worked with the visual and aural senses to a point of oversaturation, and so, "insert fragrance here." It'll be pretty interesting to see what they come up with...
Also, fun fact: The folks at IFF are responsible for fragrances such as Chanel No. 5, etc. Check out the poster of S.J.P. in their lobby to the right.
I'm not saying she's the worst looking lady in the world, but let's just say I thought it was an interesting marketing choice to use the tagline "Lovely on the Inside" for her specific fragrance.
But that is neither here nor there. I am sure she is a lovely person. and that the fragrance smells fantastic, and that she's a multi-millionaire with thousands of adoring fans.
In other news, I also worked on this Ralph Lauren shoot this past week:
Model 2
Model 1
They used this camera called the Phantom that shoots 2K resolution at 1000fps! The normal frame rate for film is 24 frames per second, so when you shoot at 1000fps and play back at 24fps, you get SUPER slow motion. If you want to get an idea of what this might look like, go to the dp's website here: http://www.maxgoldmandp.com/ and click "Work" then "Beauty." A Ralph Lauren video should pop up that was directed and dp-ed by the same two people who did this one.
What's so interesting about shooting at 1000fps, is that you need a TON of light, so they had to roll in loads of these gigantic lights called 20K's. (A frame of reference: anything I've ever shot in my life has been with lights in the 1k range -- meaning 1000 watts of light ouput. Sooo, you do the math). Pretty nutso.

Welcome to the big leagues...

How hot do those 20 K lights get? Does it feel like a heater in the room?
You walk in front of it and it's like "mmmmm... toastiness."
But the studio is big and I think there's ventilation, so everything was a good temperature. At one point, the circuit/fuse blew because of how much power all of the lights consumed though...
As promised my monthly check. AWESOME RYAN!!! i like how you're breaking down the magic of filmography for me. after reading ur description i find myself even more curious to see how the super slow mo thing looks.
haha HEY mary! i like the sticking to your monthly check promise :)
In any case, have you ever seen the show Planet Earth on the Discovery Channel? .. or really any show on the discovery channel? They use the crazy slow-mo ("overcranked") effect all the time! And that's how they get it. Movie magic!

bruce, by next year, tim burton will do MY short :) ... or you know, maybe I'll beg him to talk to me. either one.
